Quit Looking At Your Windows
Have you ever thrown back the curtains in a room just to view the distinct profiles and lines of your beautiful windows in the morning light? Unless you work for a window company… hopefully not. For as much time and effort we put into the design and aesthetics of our windows and patio doors, their main function is to really not be seen. You open the curtains to let in the sunlight and to view the outdoors from the comfort of home. Looking at the window, instead of through it, usually means that something went wrong.
If the major function of a window is to be looked through, then glass is arguably the most important component. While the basic function of windows have been pretty constant for decades (the sash move up or down, left or right, in or out), we’ve seen some of the biggest leaps in technology in regards to glass. That’s exciting news for the ‘look through the window’ people. Not so exciting for the ‘let’s admire the weatherstripping and window hardware’ people.
Glass has come a long way from just being a clear membrane to let light in and to keep the elements out. Different glass packages have very specific benefits to add to your home and your personal comfort.
You can’t talk about glass without considering energy-efficiency. For whatever reason, extreme weather seems to be the new norm. Record heat waves in the summer are followed by our new nemesis, the Polar Vortex, during the winter. For this, we offer several options of Low Emissivity (LoE) glass to help keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. LoE glass works to block out and reflect back energy (heat).
How many coats of LoE do you need? We offer several options and this is a case of where one size doesn’t fit all. Depending on your area in the country, you may benefit more from one LoE package over another. For areas that want passive solar heat gain, you may consider LoE-180. For those affected by both heat and cold, you probably want to go with LoE²-272. If you suffer through stifling summer heat, then you definitely want to go with LoE³-366. And just to make matters even more complicated, if you live in an area with frigid temperatures, we offer a Dual Low-E2 i89/272 glass option.
Another great benefit of the LoE glass is that it blocks up to 95% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays, one of the leading causes of fading for furniture, carpets, curtains and wall coverings.
As the sunlight is coming in the room, the last thing we want you to think is “I really need to clean the windows”. Our Neat® glass package actually helps keep the exterior surface of the glass clean without you having to pull out the glass cleaner and a cleaning cloth. Neat® has a layer of titanium dioxide which reacts chemically with the sun’s UV rays to cause organic materials to decompose. The end result is cleaner glass and less thoughts of grabbing the Windex®.
Did you know laminated glass isn’t just for hurricane protection and home security? It’s commonly used around industrial areas and airports for noise abatement. Do you want the sunlight, but still need privacy? We have several obscure pattern glass and tint options. We even offer Preserve®, an option to help keep the glass protected during construction.
It seems like a lot of choices for glass packages, but that’s the great thing about how far the technology has come. It’s about finding not only the right window and patio door, but making sure you get the perfect glass as well. The best part of all is the fact that once the right glass package is installed in your home, you don’t have to think about them anymore.
So with all sincerity, we want you to open up your curtains and quit looking at your windows. Sit back and enjoy the view!
